People of Royapuram


Royapuram primarily a settlement of fishermen community migrated from chepauk village of old madras after the eastablishment of east India company. Royapuram has a fine blend of people's from various ethnic groups settled here, obviously we can find different varieties of food prepared traditionally here. In early part of 20th century Royapuram becoming the home for Madras port Trust employees especially labour class workers and Railway employees. Royapuram is the home for Parsi community and Anglo Indians but in the recent past their number has come down due to migration of people to various places in India and out of country.
Due to settlement of madras port trust employees, railway employees in Royapuram business started to flourish so Royapuram started witnessing settlement of new communities like labour class people's like rickshaw pullers, fish vendors, street side food vendors, construction labours etc., later on business people's of various ethnic groups like Nadars who hailed from virudhunagar and Thirunelveli , chettiyars from Karaikudi, Marwadies from Rajasthan and Gujaraties started settling in Royapuram.
Royapuram Cuisine is a typical blend of food and taste of various ethnic groups settled in Royapuram.

Royapuram's History and Heritage


Royapuram is a very old settlement of British madras, even now it reflects the old cultures and traditions of chennai dwellers. Royapuram is known for its railway station which is opened in 1856, the first railway station of south india and second railway station still surviving in Indian sub continent and whole south east Asia . 
The name Royapuram was `The town of Peter', deriving its name from the Tamil for Peter, `Rayappar' that has a beautiful church known as St. Peter's Church built in the year 1829 by the boat people of Christian Community migrated from Chepauk in 1799

Late. Royapuram Ratinam Ammal my maternal grand mother and wife of Late Ramaswamy Naicker of Royapuram. Ratinammal is known for her special and typical royapuram traditional cuisine. Her preparations are very tasty and delicious loved by her neighbors, relatives, her well wishers. Even her foes loved her tasty cooking. She has vast experience in cooking homely food at lightening speed. This blog will mainly concentrate on various menu cooked by Ratinammal and shortcut method to cook fast and extremely delicious and will focus on Royapuram's traditional cuisine especially spicy sea foods. The secret of Ratinammal's cuisine is inherited by her 2 daughters and her daughter in law who were closely working with her in kitchen.
